The S. Ferritin test is used to measure the iron levels in a person’s bloodstream and is generally prescribed to someone who is showing symptoms of iron deficiency or of iron overload. Ferritin levels, which are not within the normal range, may also indicate some kind of liver disease.

Overview of the Ferritin Serum Test

The ferritin serum test is performed to check the iron levels in the bloodstream. This blood test is conducted when a person starts showing symptoms of anemia (caused by low iron levels) or haemochromatosis (caused by high iron levels) and helps determine how much iron is being stored in their blood.

When is the Ferritin Serum Test Prescribed?

Ferritin is a protein that is found inside the cells in the human body and is present in the blood in very small amounts. The ferritin serum test is performed to determine the levels of this protein in the bloodstream.  A doctor generally prescribes this test when someone’s complete blood count or CBC test indicates an iron deficiency or if they have developed symptoms that indicate anaemia. This test may also be prescribed when a person shows symptoms of too much iron production in the body.

Normal ferritin levels can vary in males and females and according to the patient’s age as well.

Generally, high ferritin levels may be caused by:

  • Liver disease due to excessive alcohol consumption
  • An autoimmune disorder
  • Frequent transfusion of RBCs
  • Iron Overload (hemochromatosis)

On the other hand, low ferritin levels may be caused by:

  • A diet with not enough iron
  • Heavy bleeding from a wound
  • Excessive menstrual bleeding
  • Body’s inability to absorb iron
  • Bleeding in the oesophagus, stomach, or intestines
